The five conventional water quality parameters include pH, electrical conductivity, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and temperature.
pH: Variations in the pH value of surface water affect the oxygen uptake capacity of algae and the feeding sensitivity of aquatic animals.
Electrical Conductivity: It mainly measures the electrical conductivity of water to monitor the total ion concentration in the water body, covering the total amount of conductive substances such as various chemicals, heavy metals and impurities.
Dissolved Oxygen: In surface water, dissolved oxygen is consumed not only by reducing substances such as sulphides, nitrite ions and ferrous ions, but also by the respiration of aquatic microorganisms and the oxidative decomposition of organic matter by aerobic microbes. As a key indicator for surface‑water monitoring, dissolved oxygen reflects the self‑purification capacity of a water body.
Turbidity: The turbidity value directly indicates the degree of water cloudiness, which is primarily caused by insoluble substances suspended in water, including sediment, humus, planktonic algae and colloidal particles. Reducing turbidity also lowers the content of coliform bacteria, viruses, cryptosporidium, iron, manganese and other contaminants in water.
Temperature: Changes in surface‑water temperature exert significant adverse impacts on aquatic wildlife. They influence organism growth, the feeding rate of fish and shrimp, as well as their breeding cycle and reproductive efficiency.
